After the collapse of a similar bridge in Connecticut (see National Transportation Safety Board report), the Harvard bridge was completely rebuilt in the early 1990s. Conditions for bicyclists and pedestrians were much worse on the old bridge, as in this photo from 1978. The bicyclist is approaching the bridge sidewalk, riding across an entrance ramp from Storrow Drive, the parkway that runs under the end of the bridge on the Boston side. There is a small, improvised ramp to the bridge sidewalk in the foreground of the photo.
